World Cup domestic violence fear

Mentioned on the news tonight, it was a shock to me. Police are concerned about a rise in attacks on wives during the World Cup. Enraged fans who are prone to beating their partners are more likely to kill them during the World Cup. Abused women may escape temporarily while their partners are distracted by a match, but if the result is not to the fan's liking, women may suffer terrible consequences.

UK: "Cambridgeshire Police said it was launching a domestic violence campaign for the duration of the tournament and officers promised a 'robust approach'.

"'We know that there will be an increase in the amount of alcohol consumed during the World Cup and that emotions will be running high, not just for England fans, but for fans of other countries', said a spokesman.

"'Therefore it is essential that our message is clear -- a beaten team is not an excuse for a beaten partner'." Source
