Root of all evil
Will someone please find me, somewhere, anywhere, a non-corrupt politician? Ok, the jury's still out on Bertie. For now. But it's not looking good. "Following bad-tempered exchanges on the Order of Business this morning, the Government Chief Whip, Tom Kitt, agreed to meet his Opposition counterparts and to consider their request for a question and answer session on the issue.
"The Government has proposed 35 minutes of statements on the Taoiseach's financial affairs next Tuesday.
"A Government spokesperson has noted that Taoiseach had twice volunteered information about the receipt of £8000 for a public speaking appearance in Manchester."

First of all he said that the €50,000 was understood by all to be a loan, but in 13 years nothing has been paid back, no interest has been paid, and there is no paperwork. These are all matters he was very strong on when attacking a member of a previous government who was in a similar position.
On the Manchester £8,000 he claimed he had been acting in a purely private capacity and had paid his own fare across. As if that had anything to do with anything. He was Minister for Finance at the time.
Nice book, though.
People are soft-pedalling because he needed money when his marriage broke up.
But that won't last. If any more comes out, he could be finished.
